Died, of wounds received in the Savo Island battle Nov. 13, 1942

He lost his life a few days after he was wounded. He was buried in Guadalcanal Cemetery. As a member of the crew of the USS Atlanta, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific and Pacific areas and saw action as lookout at Midway in June, 1942, and Guadalcanal in Aug. 1942.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and a Presidential unit citation. Son of Mr. and
Mrs. Pedro Castaneda of Santa Ana, he attended Irvine grammar school and was graduated from Tustin Union high school in 1941.

He entered Navy service Mar. 2, 1942, and received training at San Diego and
on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
